There are a couple names right now that come up when you mention new soul music. Eric Roberson is definitely one of those names that should be mentioned.
Like Rashaan Patterson, Raphael Saadiq and Antony Hamilton, Roberson is in the league of soul singers who came to prominence in the early 2000s and have combined live band instrumentation as well as digital instrument programming to create a fresh, clean sounding take on soul music. This is certainly one of Roberson’s stand out tracks that really showcase classic soul rhythm section as well as some fitting and smooth soul bass lines to compliment Roberson’s singing voice.
This particular song I heard on the radio coming home from work and I needed to know what it was. A few flicks of the wrist and my Shazam app was out and going. And as usual, Shazam did not let me down!
Maze is one of those bands that you would be more likely to find on a vinyl album somewhere in the catacombs of your local record store than you would front and center on iTunes. None the less, the track is just as soulful and the bass line is very dynamic and something certainly worth making note of. In addition to contributing tremendously harmonically rich contributions to the song itself, the slides thrown in help to bridge some interesting musical spaces and make for one of the more diamond-in-the-ruff soul bass lines.
Teddy Pendergrass is a household name in the world of true pioneers of soul and that really deep, moving RnB. Though Pendergrass was a tour-de-force in and of himself, his backing band and ensamble arrangements provided the soul and body to Pendergrass’s music.
In this track, you can hear a very classic, very distinct soul bass line in lock-step with the drum kit. What struck particularly hard was the very laid back quality to this track and how the backing band doesn’t overplay or function in a way that is out to overshadow Pendergrass’s vocal work.
