This week, I tried something different: an audio blog post/podcast-y sounding thing. Specifically one geared towards how to find like minded musicians.
Whether you’re seeking other musicians to jam with or to be part of your band or looking for someone to fill a vacancy already existing in your band, everyone who plays music is expecting to find a way to actually get people to play with them and build something they and the people they’re playing with find special, and unique.
In this audio post, I’ll cover:
– A new way of thinking about looking for musicians
– Common outlets to look for them
– Give you something to act on ASAP in your search for new musicians
So without further a due…
Highlights include:
– Knowing EXACTLY what you want out of a musician both in writing when you post on TalkBass, Craigslist, ReverbNation (for reach-outs), or even on reddit and in person when you’re actually playing with them. Nothing turns away musicians faster than feeling like they’re not being understood and they’re not getting their needs met as well or feeling like their time is being wasted.
– Flexibility needs to happen on both sides. If someone doesn’t know how to play something, but can learn, they might be someone worth giving more time into and letting play with you.
– Understanding that finding all musicians is a time game. It can’t be rushed, it is what it is. People respond to Craigslist ads if they see they they could be a good fit, not because they need to.
– Networking is easy to say, but if you’re shy like my and feel like you’re inconveniencing someone by asking if they know someone, understand this: the WORST – literally the WORST – thing they can do is say no, ignore you or not follow up with you. The BEST thing that can happen: you get exactly what you’re looking for and make a strong connection.
