The worst feeling in the world is playing a great gig at a fantastic venue, getting the contact information of someone inside the venue that can get you a show anytime you want it….and then losing the contact information.
That has happened a good handful of times from my personal experience. One would think simply writing the information down would be enough but the problem with that is that papers can get lost or ruined.
The only solution that seemed viable to me was to put all the information into a Google Docs spreadsheet where I know no matter how hard I try, I can’t possibly lose the information. Because it’s digital and tied to Google, I can reference it anywhere I might need it at any time. Pen and paper – though good for set lists in a pinch – might not be the best way to keep important information about venues in place, especially if your financial livelihood depends on you getting gigs and keeping them.
Here’s how to make your own Rolodex (see above) out of a Google Docs spreadsheet:
1. First, log yourself into your Google account. This way, anything you save from here on out into Docs will be connected to your Google account and you can quickly pull it up at any time.
2. Once you’re in, click the 3×3 square in the top left to reveal the Drive logo in the bottom row of the drop down menu. Click the Drive icon:
3. Once you’ve selected the Drive icon, you’ll be taken to a page where you have the option to Create a new document, presentation, folder, spreadsheet or something new. Select the Spreadsheet option. Once in the Spreadsheet, title 3 columns: Name, Contact and Venue. Of course you can make other columns titled Additional Information or something else to your choosing:
Never worry about losing valuable contact information ever again. Now the only thing you’ll need to remember is to add this to your table after your gig!
